SAFE HOMES, SAFE SCHOOLS

Schools in Michigan are REQUIRED to Educate Parents About Secure Firearm Storage

In 2024, Michigan passed a law entitled “Safe Homes, Safe Schools:” an instruction to school districts across the state to inform parents and caregivers about the importance of secure firearm storage. Building off of grassroots campaigns by groups like Be SMART who have asked for resources to be provided locally through school districts, information about Michigan’s secure storage law will now reach families statewide.

When a law is passed, we celebrate - but we can’t truly celebrate until it is implemented. End Gun Violence Michigan is working with grassroots advocates, school districts, and the Michigan Departments of Health & Human Services and Education to make sure that secure storage resources do, in fact, reach families across Michigan.

Want to see what schools are required to send out? Visit bit.ly/SHSSmaterials to go straight to MDE’s secure storage resource page. Schools should link this resource page on their own district website, and distribute the two required materials listed on that page to parents. The materials are also available in multiple languages, depending on your district’s needs!

MAKE SURE YOUR DISTRICT KNOWS ABOUT THE LAW!

Email your superintendent with our toolkit, or watch our training to learn how to speak to your school board about secure firearm storage and Safe Homes, Safe Schools!

BEYOND THE LAW: BEST PRACTICES FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS

Sending out an email or a flyer in a kid’s backpack about secure storage is an incredible first step - but there is always more a district can be doing to promote a culture of firearm safety. Ask your school board to pass a Secure Storage Resolution, or commit to taking additional actions. Districts can host advocacy organizations at parent-teacher conferences, have free gun locks available in school offices, and many other practices outlined in our best practices guide. [COMING SOON]

LET US KNOW: WHAT IS YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT DOING?

Fill out our follow up form if you see the required materials going out to families in your district! This might be through an email from the Superintendent or School Board, a flyer in your kid's backpack, or through a parent app.
