MICHIGAN’S GUN SAFETY LAWS
After 40 years of inaction, End Gun Violence Michigan has won a dozen laws, policies, and appropriations for gun violence prevention. Learn about Michigan’s key gun safety laws below!
GUN SAFETY LAWS
Secure Gun Storage
Firearms in homes where children are present must be securely stored with a gun lock or in a safe.
Extreme Risk Protection Orders
Extreme Risk Protection Orders (sometimes called a "red flag" law or abbreviated ERPO) are a tool to temporarily disarm someone who has become a danger to themselves or others.
Family members, law enforcement, or a medical professional can file a petition with the court to grant an Extreme Risk Order. A judge will then determine if the order is warranted.
Universal Background Checks
All firearm sales in Michigan require a background check, including those conducted by a licensed firearm dealer or between individuals.
Protections for Domestic Violence Survivors
Those who are convicted of felony or misdemeanor domestic violence charges are now prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition for 8 years after the completion of their sentence.
Medicaid Funding for Community Violence Intervention
This law allows violence prevention professionals to receive financial reimbursement through Medicaid to provide services to existing Medicaid patients who have been personally injured, exposed to chronic community violence, or those at significant risk of violent injury, as determined by licensed health care providers.

No Firearms at Polling Places
Open and concealed carry is prohibited in or within 100 feet of polling places, preventing intimidation by firearm when we are exercising our civic duty. This applies to both election day and early voting sites.

Law Enforcement Gun Destruction
Our new gun destruction law ensures that firearms acquired by law enforcement, either through gun buybacks or by being turned over to the State after a crime, are destroyed and not recycled back into use.
Resources
Safe Homes, Safe Schools
School districts are required to share information about securely storing firearms to every parent & caregiver in their district, every year.
