June: Silence the Violence Month of Action

17 years ago, the members of Church of the Messiah in Detroit were completely fed up  with the gun violence in their community. So they decided to march.

The Silence the Violence March is a chance to remember the victims of gun violence and bring together all the local organizations working for peace and safety. It has now grown to an enormous thousand person event in Detroit and has spread all across Michigan as a month of action against gun violence.

We're proud to announce 19 Silence the Violence events all across Michigan throughout the month of June (and more are coming along soon). We called on our members to organize events that demonstrated the spirit of gun violence prevention in their community, and they have delivered.

There will be marches, but also community resource fairs, film screenings, gun lock distributions, arts events, trainings, and even regular gun buy-backs with on-site gun destruction.

In addition to the original march in Detroit, there are events in Flint, Grosse Pointe

Woods, St. Joseph, Ypsilanti, Muskegon Heights, Canton, Ann Arbor, Grand Haven,

Oxford, Saginaw, and Berkley, with more on the way.

Please sign up so we know you're coming and let us know if you can volunteer!

This year, we are celebrating the 10 new laws, policies, and appropriations we've

passed in just a few short years. Michigan is on the way to being a leader in gun

violence prevention, thanks to the hard work of our coalition partners and volunteers!

June is also Wear Orange month. Find an event near you from our partners
